Black maternal mental health is a critical and often overlooked area where systemic racism, healthcare inequities, and stigma all intersect.

-
✽
Black women are at higher risk of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) (such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and PTSD) but are less likely to be diagnosed and treated compared to white women.
-
✽
Research shows that 1 in 5 women experience postpartum depression, but Black women experience it at higher rates—up to 40% in some studies.
-
✽
Black birthing people are 2–3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women in the U.S.—and untreated perinatal mental health conditions contribute to this disparity.
-
✽
Stigma around mental health in some Black communities prevents open conversations and treatment-seeking.
-
✽
Culturally tailored interventions (peer support, doulas, community-based perinatal mental health programs) have been shown to improve outcomes for Black mothers
-
✽
Birth trauma (from disrespect, neglect, or obstetric violence during labor/delivery) is disproportionately reported among Black women, leading to higher rates of postpartum PTSD.

FAQs
I started this fundraiser because Black maternal mental health is deeply personal to me—both as a mother and as a mental health provider. As a mom of once “two under two”, I’ve experienced firsthand the physical and emotional challenges of pregnancy and postpartum. I know how overwhelming it can be to navigate recovery, identity shifts, and the daily demands of motherhood while also facing complications that impact both body and mind.
Through my own journey, I learned how essential support is and how hard it can be to access. Too many Black mothers face high barriers when seeking mental health care: limited resources, lack of culturally responsive providers, stigma, and fear of being dismissed or misunderstood. Even as a mental health professional, I felt the weight of these barriers, and I can only imagine how isolating it must be for mothers without the same access or knowledge.
This fundraiser is about breaking those barriers. It’s about raising awareness and creating pathways to care so that Black mothers don’t have to suffer in silence. The funds will go toward expanding access to mental health services, providing resources that meet families where they are, and ensuring no mother has to choose between caring for her baby and caring for herself.
Black maternal mental health matters. With your support, we can help make sure every mother has the tools, care, and community she deserves to thrive.
-
The purpose of building the Fund is to cover the cost of mental health services. This includes co-pays or out of pocket cost for individual sessions with mental health providers.
-
Until they are gone! Folks who inquire will be able to request up to $120 per inquiry. No need to share receipts or details of their session or need - highlighting removing barriers for access.
-
No, this is not exclusive to clients of my practice. I have connected with a network of Black Moms within the Greensboro, High Point, Winston Salem area who will have access to the inquiry. Additionally I will not collect any information about the folks who inquire, just an email address for payment to be remitted to them.
